There are over a thousand varieties and they all have a different taste, sweetness and texture.

Only about a hundred varieties are grown commercially but of those most people have probably only tasted two or three.

What is the best time to buy/cook apples?

The best season for apples is the autumn, with different varieties available at different times.

If you are unsure of which variety to select check with your local fresh produce seller, they will usually be happy to help you with advice about which varieties work best for your recipes.

Supermarket apples are of limited varieties, and are often stored in cold stores until sale.

So try and get fresh apples when you can. They taste far better and have a far higher vitamin content than the inferior supermarket apples.

Apples are a rich source of pectin, which is a well-known digestive tonic and helps reduce cholesterol.

They contain no fat, on average eighty-one calories each, contain vitamins A and E, and both soluble and insoluble fiber.

Once you have tried an apple straight off the tree you will probably be looking for somewhere to try and grow one in your yard.

Apple recipes make use of a fruit that is cheap and nutritious and are always popular with families. Recipes vary from the traditional apple pie to apple butter preserves and of course to warm you on a cold winter night, warmed apple cider is ideal.
